Written by Rose, mum of Gracie, aged 10
In these lock-down times when Gracie couldn’t have her friends over for a party, we were determined to make her 10th birthday as special as possible. So a virtual party seemed the best solution. But I was nervous. Would the tech work on the day? Would the kids respond to it? And how could we create a party atmosphere?
Gracie had an idea for a theme as she is loving reading about the Amazon. Sally from TDLP suggested a ‘Save the Rainforest’ adventure and together after a ZOOM planning session, we came up with a story – a challenge to save the lesser-spotted jaguar who had his spots stolen by an ever-so-naughty parrot.
TDLP followed up with support on how to create a backdrop for ZOOM – a rainforest scene – and on wording for the invitations so that parents and children knew how to prepare for their first virtual party.
We then received a pack containing a guide full of the activities we had planned as well as a script I could read. I went for the option to host it myself but would happily get a virtual TDLP storyteller next time.
In the run-up to the party, we had loads of fun digging out toys and resources that fitted with our ‘Save the Rainforest’ theme.
On the virtual party day
On the morning of Gracie’s birthday, there was a real buzz in the house as we approached 11am, the start time for our party. It was so sweet to see Gracie’s friends coming into the ZOOM party room and how happy they were to see each other. Some had dressed up, even the parents, and clearly loved the opportunity to paint faces and dig out fancy dress.
The games lasted for about 40 minutes and to my massive relief, they all took part in everything! We did a mix of physical games – running around the house to find things – as well as guessing answers to clues.
The party finished with each guest mocking up a birthday cake with whatever they found in their fridge and cupboards. Her friends sang Happy Birthday to Gracie and then got to eat their own creation.
After we had logged off, Gracie said it had felt like a real party and she had a big smile on her face.
Thanks so much to TDLP for bringing laughter and excitement into our household with a brilliant virtual birthday party!
